Project E-Seniors

Project E- Seniors, let’s learn it NOW!

What is Project E-senior?

Project E-seniors aims to help the seniors in our community kick start and jump on the mobile phone learning and online bandwagon. Digital technology provides an abundance of social activities online, and Montfort Care hopes to equip the seniors in embarking on a journey to the digital world. Through the project, the seniors will be taught the fundamental usage of common social interactive platforms. The training pace will be customised for each senior, depending on their level of digital readiness. The digital journey that the seniors will be embarking on does not have an end state, and mastering the digital platforms is only the beginning of a lifelong learning expedition. The virtual senior-centric activities pioneered by Montfort Care will help the seniors stay engaged digitally.

Coping with Grief through Technology

Mdm Chang is a client of Grief Matters who lost her son in 2019. Project E-Seniors was introduced by the Grief Matters team as a timely tool for her to navigate her grief and help with the grieving process. As Mdm Chang learned to use Facebook and YouTube, she was able to save her son’s treasured photos and videos, as well as viewing Scriptures, which comforted her.

Together through Technology

Mdm Lang Aing and her sister, Mdm Geek Boi (67), used to be active members of GoodLife! before “Circuit Breaker” kicked in. The social distancing measures greatly impacted their lives – not only were they unable to meet each other, they also could no longer partake in the activities at the GoodLife! Centre. Initially, they were indifferent to the persuasion of the GoodLife! staff to learn new mobile applications, but the staff’s persistence helped the sisters to pluck up their courage to learn how to use Zoom. Today, physical distance no longer deters them from leading a socially active lifestyle through online activities.

Language No Longer a Barrier to Digital Literacy

Age and language are no barrier if you are determined to learn. A good role model of this is Mr Cheah! Mr Cheah wanted to master the use of WhatsApp to keep in contact with his friends, and he jumped at the chance when Project E-Seniors was introduced to him. At 85 years old and understanding very little Mandarin, Mr Cheah was able to learn how to use WhatsApp through one-on-one teaching conducted in Teochew. He was very grateful to be able to connect and communicate with his friends living abroad through Project E-Seniors.

PRESS RELEASE

23 June 2018, Saturday

Montfort Care launches GoodLife! Workout to boost social and healthcare integration for seniors

1         Montfort Care, a voluntary welfare organisation, rolls out the GoodLife! Workout for the community – a first in the social services sector, on 23 June 2018, at GoodLife! Makan.  Two hundred stay-alone seniors will join the launch, GoodLife! Workout Fiesta, where they will learn the steps from trained GoodLife! Workout Ambassadors within a community they are familiar with.

2         GoodLife!, the eldercare programme under Montfort Care, was founded on the premise that good health, good mind, good family, good friends and good community lead to good living. It is the same belief that informs the conception of the workout. Beyond the physical health benefits that exercise confers, the GoodLife! Workout aims to promote social-healthcare integration by providing a fun platform for seniors to build friendships and expand their social networks.

3         CEO of Montfort Care, Mr Samuel Ng, said, “We believe that fostering camaraderie in the community and positive peer interactions are greatly beneficial for seniors. The GoodLife! Workout not only aims to encourage seniors to get moving, but also forge closer social bonds in the community.”

4         An upbeat theme song with catchy lyrics in English, Chinese, Malay, Tamil and local dialects set the tone for the simple workout, which was choreographed by dance instructors and endorsed by a physiotherapist.  The low-impact workout has been specifically designed to achieve the objective of social-healthcare integration, by incorporating a segment that promotes participant interaction.  This involves getting participants to turn and high-five the person next to them in the later part of the workout.

5      The GoodLife! Workout has also been tailored to be accessible for all, including wheelchair users. Montfort Care has trained thirty-six GoodLife! Workout Ambassadors over the past two months. One of them is Madam Cecilia Lee Bee Eng, 78, who has been using a wheelchair since 2013.  “I like the GoodLife! Workout very much, especially the lyrics and tune,” Madam Lee said.  “Doing the workout together with so many people really adds to the atmosphere.”

6         Montfort Care has collaborated with local artiste management firm Beam Artistes to compile a music video of the GoodLife! Workout, as an easy reference for seniors to familiarise themselves with the steps involved.  The video can be accessed by scanning the QR code on the workout kit or at www.montfortcare.org.sg/goodlife-workout/.  The workout kit, which also comes with a sweatband and information on the GoodLife! Workout, will be given to all participants.

7         Many of the thirty-one finalists of Manhunt Singapore 2018, an annual contest organised by Beam Artistes, will be at the launch of the GoodLife! Workout.  “This collaboration has enabled a mutual understanding of the diverse stories that the seniors and finalists have, which represents a valuable intergenerational bonding opportunity,” Mr Samuel Seow, founder of Beam Artistes, said. “We also hope to change perceptions through these stories, by overcoming perceived personal limitations – be it mobility issues or health challenges that some of the seniors and finalists face.”

8          GoodLife! Workout Fiesta has received support from various community partners and corporate organisations.  The activities at the launch will include a cooking demonstration, cupcake and cookie decorations, exercises at a home-gym corner using everyday items, and performances by the seniors and finalists.

9          In the upcoming months following the launch, the GoodLife! Workout Ambassadors will be involved in training other seniors at all seven GoodLife! centres. This post-launch initiative helps to empower seniors to reach out to their peers in the community.
